Tuesday Night Lecture Series: “Juneau Icefield Research Program”
June 14, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Josie Hoien
Juneau Icefield Research Program
“In 2019, I conducted research with the Juneau Icefield Research Program (“JIRP,” est. in the 1940s) in SE Alaska. That summer, I joined 35 other student researchers, 8 safety staff, a revolving door of international cryospheric (ice-science) researchers and science communicators (plus a handful of support teams on the ground in Juneau) in an 82 km ski-traverse from Juneau, Alaska, to Atlin, British Columbia, across the icefield. It was the hottest summer on record, we lived in bunk rooms built on nunataks (rock islands sticking out of the ice), had lectures, and did science. We all smelled like feet for two months.
Themes: science art & communication, the power of a strong field station community/alumni network, and how we in Boji are connected to the Icefields up north.”
