Hedges’ multifaceted career spans novel writing, screenwriting, directing, and producing, making him a valuable addition to the retreat’s diverse lineup.
West Des Moines native Hedges gained prominence with his 1991 novel “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” which he adapted into a 1993 film, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. He further showcased his storytelling prowess with “About a Boy” (2002), “Pieces of April” (2003), and “Dan in Real Life” (2007), demonstrating a unique ability to blend humor with heartfelt narratives. In 2018, he wrote and directed “Ben Is Back,” a poignant drama starring his son, Lucas Hedges, and Julia Roberts.
Beyond his film work, Hedges has contributed significantly to theater and literature. He co-founded the Edge Theatre in 1985, producing numerous plays, and has penned novels such as “An Ocean in Iowa” (1998) and “The Heights” (2010).
